Il XVIII secolo è stato un periodo caratterizzato dallo stile neoclassico (uno stile che utilizzava elementi greco-romani come colonne, frontoni, proporzioni armoniche e serviva la politica). L'obiettivo è quello di attualizzare le forme dell'antichità greco-romana e di conseguenza l'architettura del rinascimento italiano. In Belgio, all'epoca parte dei Paesi Bassi austriaci, questo stile si sviluppò durante il regno di Maria Teresa e trovò grande risonanza nelle città del paese. Il Municipio è l'edificio principale della Grande Piazza. È stato completato nel 1858 ed è costruito in scisto locale e calcare importato dalla Francia. La facciata ricorda quella di un antico tempio con le sue otto colonne doriche (ispirate a un'antica orditura architettonica) che si elevano su due livelli. Gli ornamenti decorativi non sono l'unica funzione delle colonne. Quelle al piano terra sostengono il balcone e quelle al primo piano hanno un frontone triangolare con un orologio.
