La corte provinciale si trova nel luogo dove nel 1294 era stato eretto il Waterhalle , imponente edificio portuale . La Waterhalle fu demolita nel 1787 perché non più accessibile alle navi.
Il successore neoclassico fu in parte utilizzato dal governo provinciale dal 1850 fino al suo incendio nel 1878. È stato quindi indetto un concorso per un edificio destinato ad ospitare la provincia e l'ufficio postale .
La Corte è di proprietà del governo federale. È protetto come monumento dal 2002 ed è utilizzato principalmente per cerimonie ed esposizioni.
Ci sono dieci statue di principi nella Sala del Consiglio Provinciale. Le pareti sono dipinte con ritratti di personaggi famosi delle Fiandre occidentali.
