La statua di Margherita d'Austria si trova sullo Schönmarkt a Mechelen. È stato una delle figure più importanti nella storia di Mechelen .
La città fiorì sotto di lei. A quel tempo, Mechelen non era solo la capitale giudiziaria dei Paesi Bassi, ma anche la capitale amministrativa.
Nacque a Bruxelles nel 1480. Infine, i suoi genitori furono l'imperatore Massimiliano I d'Austria e Maria di Borgogna.
Il suo primo marito, Giovanna d'Aragona-Castelle, erede al trono di Spagna, morì di tubercolosi pochi mesi dopo le nozze nel 1497. Nella vicenda, Margareta diede alla luce una figlia nata morta . Pochi anni dopo (1501) si risposò con Filiberto II, duca di Savoia. Tre anni dopo il suo amato marito morì dopo aver bevuto grandi quantità di acqua ghiacciata dopo una calda giornata di caccia.
Margareta rimase vedova per il resto della sua vita . Ha affrontato il suo dolore in poesie in francese.
