Il piccolo villaggio si trova sullo scosceso pendio inciso dal torrente della Crosa e della valle di Quiello.
Già comune autonomo istituito nel 1822 per scorporo dal comune di Vergeletto e che si estendeva per 11,1 km², nel 2016 è stato accorpato al comune di Onsernone assieme agli altri comuni soppressi di Isorno, Mosogno e Vergeletto. La fusione è stata decisa con votazione popolare il 23 settembre 2012, con 27 voti favorevoli e 6 contrari, ed è diventata esecutiva il 20 maggio 2015 dopo la ratifica del Gran Consiglio.
