Secondo Pierre Bertrand, il villaggio di Puplinge faceva parte dell'antica Borgogna ed è stato abitato nel 443 da 'le peuple germanique des Burgondes'. Il nome del villaggio deriva dall'antico tedesco ed è stato successivamente modificato per adattarsi alle convenzioni ortografiche francesi aggiungendo una 'e' alla fine. Bertrand afferma inoltre che i nomi dei villaggi di Presinge, Puplinge, Corsinge, Merlinge, ecc. 'tendevano a indicare un'area di prevalenza germanica'.
