La Biblioteca cantonale di Lugano custodisce il patrimonio librario del Canton Ticino e risponde alla domanda di informazione e documentazione del pubblico. L'obiettivo principale è di tutelare l'italianità in una nazione in cui l'italiano è una lingua minoritaria. Per raggiungere questo scopo, l'istituto punta principalmente sulla letteratura e la storia dell'arte. È aiutata nel suo compito da tre altre biblioteche cantonali situate a Bellinzona, Locarno e Mendrisio e fa parte del Sistema bibliotecario ticinese.
Nata nel 1852 da una serie di riforme sull'istruzione superiore condotte dall'autorità politica dell'epoca, fu allora annessa al Liceo situato nell'ex convento di Sant'Antonio dei padri Somaschi. Nel 1861 cominciò la raccolta della Libreria Patria con lo scopo di conservare presso la biblioteca cantonale tutte le opere scritte da ticinesi, stampate in Ticino o relative al Cantone.
