Essa nasce in Repubblica Ceca come Mohelnice sul versante nord-est del Cínovecký hřbet, alto 881 m, vicino al villaggio boemo di Vorderzinnwald, devastato dopo il 1945. Dopo poche centinaia di metri, raggiunge il confine tra Germania e Repubblica Ceca e forma per circa 5 km un fiume di confine tortuoso. Qui, nel corso superiore, porta il nome di Weiße Müglitz. Poco dopo che il fiume entra completamente nel territorio sassone presso l'omonimo villaggio di Müglitz, riceve sulla destra il fiume Schwarzbach, che nasce presso Adolfov da numerosi rami sorgentiferi nelle "Praterie Nere". Uno dei rami forma per circa 2 km il confine di stato.
