Il nome Bundeskanzlerambt (2001) si riferisce alla funzione dell'edificio: il luogo di lavoro del cancelliere tedesco. È uno degli edifici più iconici della nuova Berlino. L'imponente edificio con la sua particolare facciata alta 36 metri emana la nuova consapevolezza del governo tedesco. La facciata trasparente offre ai passanti una buona vista sull'interno dell'edificio. Dietro il vetro, al sesto piano, si riunisce il consiglio dei ministri tedesco. Un piano sopra si trova l'ufficio di Angela Merkel. In cima c'è la residenza ufficiale del cancelliere.
