Il castello di Wernigerode nella Wernigerode sassone-anhalttiana assunse la sua forma attuale verso la fine del XIX secolo ed è diventato un edificio emblematico dell'istoria nord-tedesca. Oggi ospita un museo molto visitato e una sede della Fondazione culturale della Sassonia-Anhalt.
La prima menzione documentaria di un conte di Wernigerode risale all'anno 1121 ed è anche la prima menzione dell'insediamento abitativo di Wernigerode, le cui origini tuttavia risalgono a circa un secolo prima. Il castello di Wernigerode viene citato per la prima volta nel 1213 come castrum, il che lascia aperta la questione della sua origine storica.
