Il convento di Fröndenberg a Fröndenberg fu fondato dall'arcivescovo di Colonia Heinrich von Molenark tra il 1225 e il 1230 come monastero di cistercensi. Alla fine del XVI secolo fu trasformato in un convento per donne. Oggi la chiesa del convento funge da chiesa parrocchiale evangelica.
Otto von Altena finanziò la fondazione. Le cistercensi venivano da Hoven, oggi Zülpich. Il patrono è stato, accanto alla Vergine Maria, il martire Maurizio. La sorella di Otto, Richardis, divenne la prima badessa, come attestano i documenti degli anni 1257-1270. Tra il 1262 e il 1391 la chiesa del convento fu la sepoltura dei conti di La Marca.
