El monasterio de Fröndenberg en Fröndenberg fue fundado por el arzobispo de Colonia Heinrich von Molenark entre 1225 y 1230 como un convento de cistercienses. A finales del siglo XVI fue transformado en un convento de damas. La iglesia del convento hoy sirve como iglesia parroquial evangélica.
Otto von Altena financió la fundación. Las cistercienses provinieron de Hoven, hoy Zülpich. El patrono fue, además de la Virgen María, el mártir Mauricio. La hermana de Otto, Richardis, fue la primera abadesa, como atestiguan documentos de los años 1257 a 1270. Entre 1262 y 1391, la iglesia del convento fue el lugar de enterramiento de los condes de la Marca.
