Het Stift Fröndenberg in Fröndenberg werd tussen 1225 en 1230 opgericht door de Keulse aartsbisschop Heinrich von Molenark als cisterciënzers klooster voor vrouwen. Aan het einde van de 16e eeuw werd het omgevormd tot een damesstift. De stiftskerk dient tegenwoordig als evangelische parochiekerk.
Otto van Altena financierde de stichting. De cisterciënzers kwamen uit Hoven, tegenwoordig Zülpich. De beschermheilige was naast de Maagd Maria de martelaar Mauritius. Ottos zus Richardis werd de eerste abdis, zoals documenten uit de jaren 1257 tot 1270 getuigen. Tussen 1262 en 1391 was de stiftskerk de grafkelder van de graven van der Mark.
