Si trova sul fiume Leine, a circa 10 km a sud-ovest di Northeim e 10 km a nord di Göttingen. La città principale è situata ai piedi del Nörtener Wald, ma gran parte del comune si trova nel Leinegraben, una pianura tra il Solling e l'Harz.
