Barendorf si trova al margine occidentale del parco naturale Elbhöhen-Drawehn. Il comune è dal 1 marzo 1974 la sede amministrativa della comunità rurale di Ostheide, che comprende i comuni di Barendorf, Neetze, Reinstorf, Thomasburg, Vastorf e Wendisch Evern.
Il territorio di Barendorf è tipicamente un'area di Geest. La Geest copre quasi due terzi del paesaggio della Bassa Sassonia. Si è formata in diverse ere glaciali, quando i ghiacciai, con depositi di sabbia e ghiaia e grazie all'acqua di fusione che defluiva, crearono un paesaggio di morene, sabbioni e valli glaciali.
