Freren è una cittadina nel partito occidentale della Bassa Sassonia. Il centro principale si trova nell'ex distretto di Lingen, che oggi comprende la parte sud del grande distretto di Emsland.
Nella città, che si estende su una superficie di 48,99 km², vivono circa 5.000 abitanti. Freren è dal 1974 la sede del comune omonimo. I diritti di città furono conferiti a Freren nel 1723 dal re prussiano Federico Guglielmo I, la menzione documentaria più antica del villaggio risale al IX secolo.
