Cremlingen è stato menzionato per la prima volta nel 1296 come "Kremmelinghe". Attraverso varie forme intermedie come Cremnige o Kremmling, il nome attuale Cremlingen si è sviluppato a partire dal XVII secolo. Il nome del luogo è un insediamento della regione -ingen, con una forma di base *kram-l-ingi. È controverso il significato della parola determinante, dalla quale si può derivare sia un nome di persona Kremo sia una radice *kram- 'umido'.
In seguito alla riforma territoriale comunale della Bassa Sassonia del 1° marzo 1974, l'attuale comune di Cremlingen è stato unito ai comuni limitrofi di Abbenrode, Destedt, Gardessen, Hemkenrode, Hordorf, Klein Schöppenstedt, Schandelah, Schulenrode e Weddel per formare un nuovo comune di Cremlingen.
