Hellwege apparteneva al Principato Vescovile di Verden, istituito nel 1180. Nel 1648 il Principato Vescovile fu trasformato nel Principato di Verden, che fu governato in unione personale dalla Corona svedese - interrotto da un'occupazione danese - e dal 1715 dalla Corona di Hannover. Nel 1807 il Kingdom ephemero di Westfalia annetté il Principato, prima che la Francia lo annettesse nel 1810. Nel 1813 il Principato fu restituito all'Elettorato di Hannover, che - dopo il suo passaggio a Regno di Hannover nel 1814 - incorporò il Principato in una vera unione e il territorio principesco, incluso Hellwege, divenne parte della nuova Regione di Stade, istituita nel 1823. Il nome hellwege può essere utilizzato anche come cognome ed è popolare in Germania.
