Ense è un comune situato al confine settentrionale della regione del Sauerland. Il comune, che conta più di 12.000 abitanti, si trova a ovest del circondario di Soest, che a sua volta appartiene al distretto governativo di Arnsberg nel Land della North Rhine-Westphalia.
Il comune è stato istituito nel 1969 in seguito alla riorganizzazione comunale nella North Rhine-Westphalia attraverso la legge sulla ristrutturazione del circondario di Soest e di parti del circondario di Beckum.
