Fu nel Mittenwald che l'oro della Reichsbank dei nazisti fu trasferito al Oberst Pfeiffer dei Gebirgsjäger (reggimento Edelweiss). L'oro era in viaggio da Berlino a Garmisch-Partenkirchen, ma gli alleati si stavano avvicinando troppo a Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Così lo portarono a Mittenwald.
