La cappella Palatina è il nucleo più antico della cattedrale di Aquisgrana e fu fatta costruire da Carlo Magno tra il 786 e l'804 come cappella privata del suo palazzo annesso. Nonostante le aggiunte, le modifiche e i restauri nei secoli successivi la sua struttura e soprattutto il suo corredo di opere di oreficeria sono ancora eccezionalmente conservati.
L'architetto della costruzione fu il maestro Oddone da Metz, controllato direttamente da Eginardo, il sovrintendente alle fabbriche ed alle imprese artistiche dell'Imperatore stesso. Fu consacrata durante la festa dei re Magi dell'804 da papa Leone III.
