Schängel è un termine dialettale per indicare i ragazzi nati nella città di Coblenza. Coblenza è spesso chiamata anche città di Schängel. Nel 1914 fu dedicata ai Schängel una canzone di carnevale e nel 1941 fu costruita loro una fontana nel cortile del municipio, che divenne un simbolo della città.
Il termine Schängel deriva dai 20 anni di appartenenza della città di Coblenza alla Francia. Inizialmente si riferiva ai bambini di madri tedesche di origine francese. Il nome più comune all'epoca era Hans o Johann, che corrisponde al francese Jean. Tuttavia, i coblenzesi avevano difficoltà a pronunciare Jean in francese, e nel dialetto di Coblenza divenne Schang.
