Il Lago Plauer appartiene all'area lacustre di Brandeburgo an der Havel, che include oltre al Plauer anche il Lago Quenz, il Lago Breitling, il Lago Mösersche e il Lago Wend. È attraversato dall'Havel e copre una superficie di circa 640 ha. La sua profondità massima è di 6,7 m.
Il nome del Lago Plauer deriva dal quartiere di Plaue della città di Brandeburgo an der Havel. Il nome della cittadina deriva probabilmente dall'antico polabiano plavati, che si traduce con galleggiare, flottare. L'ex indipendente cittadina di pescatori si trova a nord-ovest del lago. Su questa riva, all'uscita dell'Havel, si trova il famoso Castello di Plaue con il suo parco.
