Il castello di Westerburg, citato per la prima volta nel 1192, ma probabilmente costruito prima, si trova su un plateau nel nucleo urbano attuale della città di Westerburg, nel Westerwald. La fortezza precursore apparteneva inizialmente ai conti di Leiningen e passò al più tardi all'inizio del XIII secolo ai signori di Runkel. Nella prima metà del XIII secolo il castello divenne la sede dei signori di Westerburg, che si separarono definitivamente dalla casa di Runkel nel 1288 con Enrico I di Westerburg. Nel corso del tempo il castello è stato notevolmente ampliato e ristrutturato ed è stato a lungo la residenza di un ramo dei conti di Leiningen-Westerburg. L'area del castello si trovava originariamente a est della città di Westerburg, ma ora è circondata da essa.
