Il castello di Dillenburg, che a partire dagli anni 1520 fu trasformato in una moderna fortezza, era la principale residenza dei conti di Nassau-Dillenburg. Soprattutto gli edifici abitativi e di servizio furono distrutti nel 1760 durante la guerra dei sette anni, e nel 1768 le strutture della fortezza furono livellate. Le casematte del XVI secolo sono parzialmente conserve. Tra il 1872 e il 1875 fu costruita, nel precedente cortile superiore del castello, la Torre Wilhelm secondo i progetti dell'architetto Friedrich Albert Cremer.
