La Ilse nasce sul pendio del Bickplecken, alto 278 m, e scorre inizialmente in direzione sud-est, attraverso Welstorf e Kirchheide, raggiungendo Bredaerbruch ed Entrup. Circa dalla Steinmühle, a sud di Entrup, la Ilse prosegue in direzione ovest, attraversa Leese e scorre da lì verso sud sfociando a Lieme presso Bega-kilometro 12 nel Bega. La Ilse scorre esclusivamente nel territorio della città di Lemgo.
