Il Wolfssee fa parte della Sechs-Seen-Platte a Duisburg-Wedau. Come gli altri laghi, è un lago artificiale e si trova al centro dell'area dei laghi.
L'intera zona ricreativa si trova nel distretto di Duisburg-Süd. Il suo centro ha le coordinate geografiche 51° 22,8' Nord, 6° 47,8' Est. Gli altri cinque laghi sono il Wambachsee, il Masurensee, il Böllertsee, il Wildförstersee e il Haubachsee. Insieme hanno una superficie d'acqua di quasi 2 km², l'area ricreativa misura 2,82 km² e ha una rete di sentieri escursionistici con 18 km di percorso. L'area e il Wolfssee sono facilmente accessibili dall'A3, uscita Duisburg-Wedau. Tutti e sei i laghi sono il residuo dell'estrazione di materie prime da parte della cava di ghiaia del conte von Spee nel 20° secolo. Solo il Haubachsee è stato completamente scavato solo nel 2001.
