Schmergow è un luogo situato immediatamente a sud dell'Havel, tra Brandenburg an der Havel e Werder, nella Mittelmark, a ovest della marca di Brandeburgo. Appartiene al comune di Groß Kreutz e conta circa 850 abitanti su una superficie di 16,35 chilometri quadrati. Schmergow è caratterizzato da attività agricole come la coltivazione di frutta, verdura e cereali, ex aree di estrazione dell'argilla e foreste alluvionali lungo le rive dell'Havel.
A Schmergow sono state rinvenute tracce di insediamenti risalenti al medio periodo mesolitico. Il nome "Smergowe" appare per la prima volta nel XIII secolo.
