Schmergow is a locality located immediately south of the Havel, between Brandenburg an der Havel and Werder in the Mittelmark in the western part of the state of Brandenburg. It belongs to the municipality of Groß Kreutz and has about 850 inhabitants in an area of 16.35 square kilometers. Schmergow is characterized by agricultural uses such as fruit, vegetable, and grain cultivation, former clay mining areas, and riparian forests along the banks of the Havel.
In Schmergow, traces of settlement have been documented dating back to the Middle Stone Age. The name “Smergowe” first appears in the 13th century. It is Slavic and means "place where morels grow"; it is also possible that it means "settlement of a man named Smerg." Therefore, the village coat of arms features a morel.
