Schmergow es un lugar situado inmediatamente al sur del Havel, entre Brandenburg an der Havel y Werder, en el Mittelmark, en el oeste del estado de Brandeburgo. Pertenece al municipio de Groß Kreutz y tiene alrededor de 850 habitantes en una superficie de 16,35 kilómetros cuadrados. Schmergow está caracterizado por usos agrícolas como el cultivo de frutas, verduras y cereales, antiguas áreas de extracción de arcilla y bosques de ribera en la orilla del Havel.
En Schmergow se han encontrado evidencias de asentamientos que datan del medio Paleolítico. El nombre "Smergowe" aparece por primera vez en el siglo XIII. Es eslavo y significa "lugar donde crecen las colmenillas"; también podría significar "asentamiento de un hombre llamado Smerg". El escudo del pueblo muestra, por lo tanto, una colmenilla.
