Il paese, che conta circa 150 abitanti, si trova su un'isola di sabbia formatasi in una valle che misura 800 metri di lunghezza e 400 metri di larghezza, elevandosi di due metri rispetto al livello del terreno circostante, nel mezzo della Spreewald. È completamente circondato da corsi d'acqua, come la Spree e il Leiper Graben. Leipe non era collegato alla rete stradale fino agli anni '60 ed era quindi praticamente raggiungibile solo via acqua.
Le case del paese si trovano quindi in un ovale lungo la riva dell'isola e rivolgono la loro facciata principale verso l'acqua. Chi visita Leipe oggi via terra entra nei terreni pertanto da dietro. L'interno dell'isola e quindi il centro del villaggio è disabitato. Qui si trovano aree agricole.
