L'esercito danese aveva già iniziato la ritirata dalla fortificazione di Danewerk la sera del 5 febbraio 1864 durante una tempesta di neve, il che fu percepito dal comando dell'esercito prussiano-austriaco come un movimento di truppe. La mattina del 6 febbraio 1864, le truppe prussiane sotto il principe Friedrich Karl von Preußen riuscirono, come previsto dai danesi, a oltrepassare il fiume Schlei e quindi a aggirare la posizione di Danewerk. Il comandante supremo danese Christian Julius de Meza ordinò quindi una ulteriore ritirata per evitare l'accerchiamento delle sue truppe.
