L'assedio di Pirna e la dissoluzione dell'esercito sassone segnarono l'inizio della Guerra dei Sette Anni, che poi si svolse senza il Elettorato di Sassonia, ma spesso sul suo territorio.
Il 29 agosto 1756, poco dopo mezzogiorno, le truppe prussiane attraversarono il confine sassone in tre colonne. La generalità sassone aveva già elaborato settimane prima il piano di sistemare il suo esercito in due accampamenti a Meißen e Pirna. Mentre i prussiani affermavano ancora che le truppe stavano marciando verso la Boemia, Brühl fece trasferire l'esercito nell'accampamento di Pirna. Così i prussiani trovarono la maggior parte delle città senza guarnigione, poiché queste erano riuscite a salvarsi poco prima.
