Il Grande Rachel, con i suoi 1452 m s.l.m., è la seconda cima più alta della Foresta Bavarese o del Böhmwald dopo il Grande Arber e la montagna più alta del Parco Nazionale della Foresta Bavarese. Insieme al Piccolo Rachel, situato a 900 m a nord-ovest, forma la montagna Rachel.
Sulla sua cima rocciosa si ergono una maestosa croce di legno e una baita per il sorvegliante di montagna. Il panorama si estende dall'Osser e dall'Arber a nord-ovest fino al Dreisesselberg a sud-est; con l'influsso del Föhn o in situazioni meteorologiche di inversione, è inoltre visibile la catena montuosa delle Alpi, dal Toten Gebirge fino alla Zugspitze. Nel frattempo, questa vista panoramica è ostacolata da abeti che crescono nella zona della cima. Il Grande Rachel è una meta escursionistica popolare. Al di sotto, presso il Waldschmidthaus, gli escursionisti possono riposarsi e rifocillarsi; dal 2011, a causa di modifiche alle norme antincendio, non sono più possibili pernottamenti.
