Sopra il comune di Monreal nella Eifel si ergono nella valle dell'Elzbach su un promontorio alto 350 m s.l.m. le rovine vicine della Löwenburg, conosciuta anche come Castello di Monreal, e della Philippsburg. Quest'ultima è comunemente chiamata "il Rech".
Il castello di spigolo fu menzionato per la prima volta in un documento nel 1229. Il suo costruttore è considerato il conte Hermann III di Virneburg, che costruì la struttura, in modo piccante, sulla base di un contratto di divisione sul terreno di suo fratello Filippo. Tuttavia, il conflitto fraterno che ne derivò fu successivamente risolto in un accordo, mediante il quale Filippo cedette i suoi diritti sulla regione a suo fratello.
