La contea di Tecklenburg era un territorio del Sacro Romano Impero. Si trovava nel circolo imperiale della Vestfalia ed era grande 330 km². Dal 1707 la contea fece parte di Brandeburgo-Prussia.
Intorno al castello di Tecklenburg, nel sud-ovest di Osnabrück, Ekbert I e i successivi conti di Tecklenburg costruirono un ampio dominio tra i fiumi Hunte ed Ems. Fino al 1173, i conti possedevano la tutela sulla diocesi di Münster. Tra il 1180 e il 1236 possedevano anche la tutela della diocesi di Osnabrück. In questo periodo, la contea era, insieme alla contesa contea di Ravensberg, la potenza più forte in questa regione. Nelle dispute per il potere a livello imperiale nei secoli XII e XIII, i sostenitori di Tecklenburg erano di Lothar di Süpplingenburg e dei Welfen. Simon I acquisì nel 1189 il dominio di Ibbenbüren.
