Il distretto di Gießen si trova nel circondario di Gießen in Assia centrale. Dalla sua fondazione nel 1832 fino alla fine del 1938, portava la denominazione di Kreis Gießen.
Il distretto di Gießen si estende nelle sue località principali dal bacino di Gießen fino alla parte settentrionale della Wetterau a sud. Tuttavia, la parte più estesa è occupata dal Vordere Vogelsberg nella metà orientale, mentre a est si trovano parti del Vogelsberg. A nord-ovest del bacino di Gießen si estendono inoltre parti del paesaggio montano di Gladenbach sotto forma della foresta di Krofdorf-Königsberger, con il Dünsberg ben visibile all'interno del distretto. A sud-ovest, parti del distretto si estendono nelle regioni orientali del Hintertaunus.
