L'NSG è parte del "Pays des collines di Messel" e ha una superficie di circa 65,64 ha.
Le Silzwiesen di Darmstadt-Arheilgen sono state messe sotto tutela per garantire lo sviluppo e la promozione delle foreste miste, dei prati forestali a umido alternato fino a quelli bagnati, delle zone paludose e delle acque sviluppate in modo naturale.
Nell'area si trovano numerose specie vegetali e animali rare e minacciate nella loro esistenza.
