Il parco naturale della regione vulcanica di Vogelsberg si trova nelle zone più elevate del Vogelsberg, al centro dell'Assia. Comprende il territorio di undici comuni situati intorno alla Foresta Superiore, la parte centrale della montagna, nei distretti di Vogelsberg, Wetterau, Gießen e Main-Kinzig. Il parco ha un'area di 883,36 km² ed è quindi grande all'incirca quanto la capitale federale Berlino.
Il parco è stato istituito nel 1956 come area protetta del paesaggio del Vogelsberg Alto, con un'area di 225 km², e nel 1957 è stato rinominato parco naturale del Vogelsberg Alto. Tra il 1963 e il 1969 si è verificata un'estensione a 384,47 km², nel 1967 il cambio di nome in parco naturale del Vogelsberg Alto, e nel 2016 il cambio di nome in parco naturale della regione vulcanica di Vogelsberg. Nel 2004 è stato ampliato alla sua attuale area di 883,36 km².
