Per quasi cinque secoli, la città tedesca di Francoforte sul Meno fu a capo di due differenti stati:
Francoforte era la principale città del Sacro Romano Impero, essendo sede delle elezioni imperiali sin dall'885 e città predisposta per le incoronazioni imperiali dal 1562 al 1792. Francoforte venne dichiarata Città libera dell'Impero nel 1372, atto che rese la città immediatamente soggetta all'imperatore, evitando che cadesse nelle mani di governanti regionali o aristocratici locali.
