L'impianto di chiuse costruito negli anni '90 dell'Ottocento e successivamente ampliato si trova al km 71,5 del DEK ed era recentemente in funzione come chiusa di risparmio con tre camere. Grazie al progetto di infrastruttura tedesca n. 17, la tratta meridionale del DEK ha acquisito anch'essa importanza. Come collegamento tra la regione della Ruhr e il canale di Mittelland, fa parte di una via navigabile continua dal Reno a Berlino. Per questo motivo, la chiusa di Münster è stata ricostruita come chiusa gemella dal 2004 al 2014. È gestita dall'Ufficio per le acque e la navigazione di Rheine, ha un dislivello medio di 6,2 m ed è operata quotidianamente a orari stabiliti in loco.
