Brual viene menzionata per la prima volta nel 10° secolo. Secondo la tradizione, c'erano tre castelli a Brual.
La vicinanza con gli East Frisian non è sempre stata favorevole per i brualesi. La chiusura dell'Ems, la più importante via d'acqua della zona, era facile da realizzare a Brual. Il possesso delle fortificazioni, il Dieler Schanze, era molto prezioso per i popoli e i principi interessati.
