La Sirenetta è una fiaba dello scrittore danese Hans Christian Andersen, pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1837. La fiaba è molto conosciuta e, soprattutto in Danimarca, è una delle opere di Andersen più amate; alla protagonista è dedicata una statua nel porto di Copenaghen. Anche il teatro, il cinema, il balletto, e tutte le arti in genere, hanno più volte ripreso la storia di Andersen, con innumerevoli produzioni.
La Sirenetta vive sul fondo del mare con suo padre il Re del Mare rimasto vedovo, sua nonna, e cinque sorelle maggiori. A quindici anni, secondo la tradizione delle sirene, le viene concesso di nuotare fino alla superficie per guardare il mondo sopra il mare. La Sirenetta ha così modo di vedere una nave comandata da un bellissimo principe, di cui s'innamora.
