Bælum Sønderskov è un mosaico di boschi decidui, piantagioni di conifere e piccole aree di vegetazione di brughiera. Nel sottobosco si trovano diversi sentieri scavato. Un sentiero scavato è una vecchia strada che nel tempo è stata usurata nel terreno dal passaggio ripetuto - spesso di persone, animali e carri. Si presenta come una depressione nel paesaggio e può essere profonda diversi metri. I sentieri scavato si formano soprattutto su pendii, dove l'erosione e le acque piovane hanno accentuato i segni di usura. Molti sentieri scavato risalgono all'antichità e al medioevo e oggi sono protetti come monumenti storici, che raccontano dei viaggi e dei percorsi di epoche passate attraverso il paesaggio.
