Gijón è una città e porto marittimo della Spagna nordoccidentale, posta nelle Asturie, sul golfo di Biscaglia.È sede di fonderie, industrie tessili e cartiere con l'attività economica locale che si basa anche sulla raffinazione del petrolio e dello zucchero, sulla lavorazione del tabacco, dei prodotti chimici, dei vetri e della porcellana, oltre che dei cantieri navali, esportando carbone, rame, ferro, zinco, pesce e prodotti agricoli. Per Gijón transita la strada più importante della costa settentrionale spagnola, tra il porto di Santander, a est, e quello di Ferrol, a ovest. Il porto, attivo dal 1480, venne fortificato nella seconda metà del XVI secolo e nel 1788 fu ampliato per far fronte ai commerci con le Indie occidentali.
