Sulla sua etimologia va detto che apparentemente è correlata alla parola in lingua basca mendi. Non è del tutto chiaro il suo significato completo, ma alcuni filologi come Xabier Kintana, membro della Real Academia de la Lengua Vasca, la collegano alla parola mendate [3] considerando che la parola ata è una variante di ate. Altri filologi l'hanno spesso considerata una variante del toponimo Mendieta, che significa luogo di monti.
