L'Università dei Paesi Baschi è un'università pubblica della comunità autonoma dei Paesi Baschi. Erede dell'Università di Bilbao, inizialmente era composta dalla Facoltà di Scienze economiche e commerciali di Sarriko e dalle facoltà di Medicina e Scienze. Nel 1970 entrarono a far parte dell'UPV/EHU anche la Scuola Nautica, la Scuola Universitaria di Studi Commerciali di Bilbao e le Scuole Tecniche di Ingegneri, fino ad arrivare ai circa trenta centri didattici che la compongono attualmente. Si distingue come principale istituto di ricerca nei Paesi Baschi, realizzando il 90% delle ricerche di base svolte in quel territorio e beneficiando del buon ambiente industriale della regione.
