Secondo la tradizione classica, su quest'isola si trovava il Tempio di Moloch/Kronos .
Nel 1457 sull'isola fu costruito un eremo dall'equipaggio di una nave veneziana guarita dalla peste. Lo chiamarono San Sebastián.
Nel 1706 iniziò la costruzione di un castello. Basato sulla torre di avvistamento islamica, l'attuale faro fu costruito nel 1908, il secondo faro elettrico in Spagna, a 41 metri sul livello del mare.Nel 1860 fu costruita una passeggiata che funge da collegamento tra l'isola e l'area urbana di la città.
La sagoma originale di questo castello sul mare ne ha fatto l'ambientazione per diversi film. Hollywood lo ha utilizzato come ambientazione per le scene d'azione del film dell'agente James Bond Die Another Day, con Pierce Brosnan e Halle Berry.
Attualmente, il Castillo de San Sebastián è utilizzato come spazio espositivo nelle casematte interne e come sede per concerti e altri eventi ricreativi all'aperto.
