Quando si entra nella chiesa di Santiago, la vista è impressionante, per le forme austere e il bianco predominante del tempio. Non è una grande nave; infatti il presbiterio ai piedi della chiesa occupa molto spazio.
Le sue origini risalgono al 1236, quando il monarca Fernando III conquistò l'antica capitale di al-Andalus.
Nel 1555, l'architetto Hernán Ruiz II costruì il campanile incorporando il vecchio minareto islamico , che si può ancora vedere oggi nel tempio, essendo l'unica delle chiese Fernandine che, insieme al minareto di San Juan e quello del conservata la chiesa di San Lorenzo. Sarebbe il minareto più antico della città , ad eccezione degli scarsi resti del primo minareto della Moschea di Córdoba.

La porta medievale, situata sulla strettissima Calle Ronquillo Briceño, è poco comoda da vedere.
