Kembs, antico villaggio gallo-romano (anticamente chiamato Cambete), si sviluppò lungo l'asse di una strada romana che collegava Strasburgo ad Augst, in Svizzera. In seguito, Kembs divenne un'importante stazione di smistamento per il Royal Post Office (il ferro di cavallo sul suo stemma ricorda questo periodo). Tra il 1928 e il 1932, Kembs è stata la sede della prima delle dieci centrali idroelettriche costruite sul tratto franco-tedesco del Reno, contemporaneamente alla realizzazione del primo tratto del Grand Canal d'Alsace sotto la direzione dell'ingegnere Koechlin. Inaugurata il 9 ottobre 1932 dal Presidente della Repubblica Albert Lebrun, la centrale fu distrutta durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale e fu ricostruita e rimessa in funzione nel 1945.
