La Tour de Constance è l'emblema del passato reale di Aigues-Mortes. Aigues-Mortes ha avuto anche la sua parte di guerre religiose. Nel 1705, la "Tour de Constance" divenne una prigione per i Protestanti. Abraham Mazel riuscì a scappare dalla torre, ma Marie Durand rimase imprigionata per 38 anni fino alla sua morte nel 1768. Divenne un simbolo di eroismo e coraggio.
